| Tips For This Fall How to Reduce Your Energy Bill There are lots of reasons to cut down on your energy usage. Cutting down on gas and electricity can save you a lot of money in the long run, but saving energy doesn't just benefit you as an individual; it also has positive effects on the environment. Tips for Saving Energy Use energy-efficient light bulbs. While the new compact fluorescent bulbs are slightly more expensive than regular bulbs, they pay for themselves by lasting much longer. Plus, the energy these bulbs save outweighs the initial expense. Check your ducts to make sure they're not leaking. In many houses, owners are paying extra for energy that is wasted by worn or poorly fitted ductwork. Make sure all the ducts are attached fully to the vents, to each other & to every cooling unit. Replace outdated heating and cooling appliances with new ones, since appliances consume more and more energy as they get older. When you shop for new appliances, make quality choices. Lower price tags may seem like a wise choice, but inefficient energy usage of cheaper appliances will make them cost more in the long run. Buy a programmable thermostat. A programmable thermostat let's you set up a schedule for heating and cooling our home. You can set the thermostat to a different temperature use less power when you are out of the house to make sure you are not wasting energy. You can adjust the settings for winter and summer to fit your energy needs. Make sure your roof and walls are completely insulated. Leakage in the insulation system means the cooling and heating process must repeat again and again. As the heating and the cooling appliances consume 50% of the total energy consumption, this waste of energy really adds up. If you find any problem in your insulation, repair it immediately. It can cause a dramatic change in your energy bill. Seal all the air leaks in fireplaces, attic fans, recessed lights, windows, doors and attic entrances. |
